Interactive map: SNAP retailers

Where can you spend your SNAP benefits? What types of stores take SNAP?

Use the interactive map below to find out.

p/s Don't forget our local farmers' markets - including the Farmers Market on Historic North 1st Street  , Urbana's Market at the Square , and the farmer's market at the Champaign-Urbana Public Health Department.

How we did this:

Using a list of SNAP retailers from the USDA, we gave each store a "type" based on what they sold. Retailers self-report their store type when they apply to accept SNAP benefits; however, that detail is not released as it may be used to identify sales figures via Freedom of Information Act requests.

These are the definitions we used to classify retailers based on the USDA's classifications; however, in the interest of this map, we combined a few groups :

Grocery stores: Includes stores such as Wal-Mart, Meijers, County Market, Target, Big K-Mart, etc.

Convenience stores:  Includes gas stations, liquor stores, small mini-marts, etc.

Specialty stores: Includes stores such as fish markets, ethnic food markets, bakeries, Papa Murphey’s and home delivery services

Pharmacies:  Includes stores such as WalGreens, CVS

Combination stores: Includes stores such as Dollar General and Family Dollar
