Vacancies: Then and Now

The number of vacant housing units in Champaign County increased over the past 10 years, according to Census Bureau estimates.

While the number of housing units increased an estimated 11 percent between 2000 and 2009, the number of vacant housing units increased almost 50 percent, according to data from the 2000 Census Bureau and 2005-2009 American Community Survey estimates.

Still, the overall percentage of vacant housing units of the current housing stock remains relatively small - at an estimated 8 percent. In 2000, 6 percent of the county's housing stock was vacant.
