Where it goes: Local CDBG funds

Federal funding for Community Development Block Grants may be threatened as Congress works out the upcoming fiscal year's budget.

Since 1974, these funds are given annually to more than 1,200 municipalities throughout the U.S. for a various purposes, including economic development, public services and public improvements and housing projects - primarily for low-to-moderate income families.

Below are interactive graphs that show how Champaign, Urbana and Rantoul have used these funds since 2002. Click on the graph to interact and see expenditures by category.

There are dozens of ways that a municipality can use its Community Development Block Grant.

Here are examples of how a municipality can use its money in each category.

Acquisition:  Buying, clearing, demolishing or relocating property

Economic Development:  Commercial/industrial land acquisition and disposition

Administration and planning: General program administration costs

Housing: Rehabilitation of residential homes, administration costs and lead-based paint or lead hazard testing and abatement

Public improvements: General costs and improvements to homeless facilities and senior citizen centers or centers for disabled

Public services: Senior services, child care services, homeownership assistance and youth services

Total disbursements: The total amount spent
