Students living at The Place at 117 to have a safer way to bike to campus

A grant from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) has supported the Village of Savoy’s intent to construct a shared use path along First Street next year, estimated to cost $1.2 million. The Place at 117 is a student living apartment complex located in Savoy at the intersection of First Street and Curtis Road. It’s a 10-minute drive to campus by car or a 30-minute ride on the public bus. Yet 1 mile of the 2.3 mile bike ride from the complex to campus along First Street are missing bike lanes and lighting, and the Village of Savoy plans to fix that.

Complaints rise about reduced bus services, but MTD can’t “speed up” training drivers

In August this year, Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) announced that many bus routes’ services would be reduced due to a shortage of bus drivers.  Officials said somewhere in the range of 80 to 90 drivers quit and about the same number were hired. Amy Snyder, chief of staff at MTD, said that it’s impossible to speed up the training.

Champaign County rail systems see frequent transport of hazardous materials

Approximately 107 trains, often carrying hazardous materials, pass through Champaign County’s 225 miles of active rail lines each day. Freight traffic accounts for about 101 of these trains. According to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, there have been 195 hazardous materials incident reports filed since 2010, with the majority of them being spills or leaks on local roads and streets, as well as some interstate highways.

Champaign-Urbana Amtrak ridership continues to decline

Champaign-Urbana Amtrak ridership has decreased from Illinois Terminal by 20 percent from 2013 to 2018, according to Champaign County Regional Planning Commission (CCRPC) data. Through October and November, Amtrak trains had departed around 29 minutes later than their scheduled departure time on average from Champaign-Urbana. Some trains between the two months had even departed up to one to two hours later than their scheduled departure, according to an Amtrak status database.

What drives collisions in Champaign County: Causes of crashes revealed

There were 3,481 traffic accidents in the county. In the City of Champaign, there were 1,645 accidents alone and in Urbana there were 641 accidents, in 2017, the most recent data available. Between 2010 and 2017, most of the traffic accidents in the County occurred due to the driver’s failure to reduce speed and failure to yield other vehicles, according to a review of IDOT data.

Street cameras help with traffic flow, not ticketing

For 15 years, a silent guard has stood watch over the intersection of Neil Street and Bradley Avenue, guiding Champaign cars and pedestrians as they travel through it. Twenty-four hours a day the guard is responsible for making sure travelers reach their destinations safely and on time.
